A three-night sled/backpack to Dolly Sods North. Lots of open terrain and not a lot of steep elevation change. Backpack will start early Friday morning where we will establish a base camp about 5 miles into the woods. We will camp out three nights in this location. We will do two days of day hikes from this location. Backpack will end early afternoon on Monday. This backpack is suitable for three-season backpackers who want to learn how to hike and camp out in the winter. More advanced backpackers welcome but program will be focused toward teaching skills and the group will stay together. Appropriate winter gear required including snowshoes, winter boots with removable liners, -20 degree sleeping bag and full body wind protection. Contact leader for more information. Leaders will be using a sled to haul gear. Your choice whether to use a sled or carry a backpack. Contact leader if you want to borrow a sled or instructions on how to make one. On the registration form under other comments, please list what kind of boots, sleeping bag and tent you have. Leaders don't recommend buying a lot of gear before you get some experience seeing what other people are using for gear and what they think about it. Much of your gear can be rented or borrowed. Contact leaders for more information. If you are a member of Facebook, a great way to keep up to date on new trips is by joining our backpackers group. See the link below:
