Commuter parking lot in Windsor, CT, on Cottage Grove Road across from Columbia Rd.,
Connecticut, West of River,
Meet at 9:45 AM to leave at 10:00 AM from the commuter parking lot on Cottage Grove Road in Windsor for a leisurely hike and bushwhack through Matianuck Natural Area Preserve in Windsor and Keney Park in Hartford. There will be numerous stops to inspect the sights. Some highlights: a small, DEEP-enhanced sand barren, a beaver pond, an abandoned public stable, an abandoned zoo, a newly refurbished golf course, and an abandoned go-kart track. Hikers must be able to handle walking at about 1.5 miles per hour for about five miles, about half through trail-less obstacle-strewn woods, possibly in snow. Go to this web address for more information: http://davidreikandjudithlohmanpictures.blogspot.com/2016/12/sherwood-forest-zoo-and-matianuck.html . The hike is canceled if there is heavy rain or dangerous driving conditions.
The commuter parking lot entrance (on the South side of Rte. 218, Cottage Grove Road, in Windsor) is 0.7 of a mile West of Matianuck Avenune and 0.6 of a mile east of Rte. 187 (Blue Hills Avenue).
