White Mountain 2-Week Spike Teen Trail Crew w/LNT!
Date and Time
Sunday, June 17, 2018 4:00PM - Friday, June 29, 2018 6:00PM
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
Registration is required for this activity.
This popular two-week program is designed for teens, ages 16-18, who are looking for a longer and more diverse program and a chance to learn the Leave No Trace principles.. The week begins on Sunday evening with dinner and an orientation at AMC's Camp Dodge Volunteer Center.
On Monday, your crew will pack all food supplies, camping equipment, and personal belongings into the woods with the Crew Leaders for a 2-day Leave No Trace training in the backcountry. Teens will learn about living simply and reducing their environmental impact in the back country. www.lnt.org.
The crew will wrap up their Leave No Trace training on Tuesday afternoon and prepare for the trail work portion of the crew, Wednesday through the following Friday. The work may involve brushing the trail corridor, installing drainage to limit erosion problems in the mountains, quarrying and placing rock steps, building bog bridges, or a variety of other projects. Please remember that the work will be strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine. Our packs usually weigh 40 to 60 pounds.
This intensive program includes 9 nights in the backcountry living and working together on trail work projects in the White Mountains. There will be recreational opportunities as well as working on the trail, and additional food and supplies will be brought out to the crew by our support staff. On the final Friday, the crew returns to Camp Dodge for the traditional barbecue.
These crews are not all work; there are plenty of opportunities to swim, see the views, eat great food, and more. Spike camps are located off trail, relatively close to the project site. However, some 2-Week Spike Crews base out of a backcountry shelter or tent site.
All participants assist with meal preparation in the backcountry. Participants will learn to cook quality meals in the woods, and there will be plenty of it. The crew builds quite an appetite over the course of the two weeks. After dinner and cleanup, the crew plays games, tells stories, and discusses conservation and environmental ethics - but most of all they just kick back and enjoy the evening. We supply all tents and group cooking equipment for the group, leadership, and transportation to and from the Project site from Camp Dodge.
