This program is ideal for teens, ages 15-17, to live and work in the backcountry while engaging in a worthwhile and much appreciated service project on the Appalachian Trail. You can expect to have a great time in the woods, while learning and practicing trail work and backpacking skills. If you are new to camping and hiking, or new to volunteer trail work, we highly recommend this as an exciting way to learn all of these great new skills.
The volunteer work on the AT may involve brushing the trail corridor, installing drainage to limit erosion problems, quarrying and placing rock steps, building bog bridges, or a variety of other projects. The work will be strenuous and demanding but fully satisfying! We are outdoors rain or shine.
On Monday, your crew will pack all food supplies, tools, camping equipment, and personal belongings into the woods with two Crew Leaders for a five-day, four-night excursion on the Appalachian Trail in the Berkshires. All participants assist with setting up camp and meal preparation in the backcountry. The group hikes to a pre-scouted primitive, campsite and works together to set up tents, tarps, retrieve water, and hang food bags in the trees away from critters. Participants learn to cook quality meals in the woods using leave no trace practices which minimize the group's impact on the environment. Most evenings after dinner and cleanup, the crew plays games, tells stories, and discusses conservation and environmental ethics. There are also plenty of opportunities between trail work and camp chores, to swim, see the views, learn knot tying, share laughs and much more.
This Volunteer Crew begins on Sunday evening with dinner and an orientation at AMC's Noble View Outdoor Center (KC) in Russell, MA
Complete registration packets are due 3 weeks prior to start date.
