Challenging Winter Day Hiking Weekend: Alpine Traverse

Challenging, rewarding hike with spectacular views along either the Franconia ridge (8.9 miles; 3,850' elevation gain; 8:05 booktime) or the Southern Presidential ridge (9.5 miles; 3,750' elevation gain; 7:40 booktime), depending on conditions. Exposed hiking above treeline for well conditioned hikers with some above treeline winter experience and full winter gear. While we may expect a full day and possible exit via headlamp, the Leaders will adjust goal to accommodate conditions. Required equipment includes waterproof, insulated winter boots, snowshoes, full crampons, face protection and headlamp. Use of light traction is optional as conditions dictate. Snowshoes, crampons, light traction and poles are available for rent by prior arrangement. Sunday hike is leaders' choice, based upon group's interests. You will not be registered until the leader receives your check.

Ed has led hundreds of AMC hikes, including all 48 NH four thousand footers in winter. Ed has been an instructor for the AMC Mountain Leadership School since 1994, and is currently the School Director. Ed also instructs for the ADK Winter Mountaineering School. Ed has hiked most of the New England 4,000 footers and section hiked the John Muir Trail. Ed is the Leadership Development Chair and the Backpacking and Northern Hikes Committee sub-chair for the Narragansett Chapter.
