Bulls Island NJ,
New Jersey, Western,
Registration is not required for this activity. However, you may wish to contact the leader(s) if you have any questions.
Join us for a hike through winter forest & field, traveling along the scenic Lockatong Creek in the Hunterdon (NJ) Land Trust Alliance. We'll begin at Bulls Island next to the visitor center. Then travel the White Oak Trail, passing an old quarry on our way towards Lockatong creek. Near the creek we should be able to see and visit the remnants of an old stone homestead and spring house. The forest will eventually give way to fields near our (short) lunch break - half way through this 9-mile hike.
The trail does have sections that can be a bit slippery when wet or frozen. Hiking boots - suitable for winter conditions - are recommended. Having traction devices with you is definitely recommended. If the snow is deep, consider bringing your snowshoes. There is about 1,000' of total elevation gain during the hike. Please remember to bring warm hat, gloves and/or mittens, hard shell (rain gear) and warmer layers - just in case.
Meet at 10:00 AM at Bull's Island State Park (about 3 miles north of the town of Stockton, NJ). Don't forget to bring a pack lunch, snacks, and water. Steady, heavy rain or awesomely bad weather may cancel hike. If in doubt, call leader by 9:00am.
