This overnight backpack trip will take place in the Roaring Creek water shed area of the Weiser State Forest between State Rts. 42 and 54 north of Mt. Carmel and Aristes. The start/end is at the forest service offices on State Rt. 42 a mile north of Aristes. This entire valley was private water company land until a few years ago when it was transferred to the state as forest land. There are several reservoirs for public water supplies in the valley, a few old roads and many trails, some from the days when coal miners walked from their homes to the mines every day.
Our trip will explore most of the length of the valley passing the largest reservoir and returning along the Big Mt trail. We plan to meet at the office parking area at Noon, Saturday April 15 and descend into the valley. After hiking 6 miles we will locate a place to spend the night near the reservoir. The next day Sunday April 16, we will continue along the valley for another mile and then hike up to the top of Big Mt and return to the starting point after covering 10 miles. I would expect to finish in the early afternoon.
Most of the hiking is fairly level except for the descent into the valley and the ascent the next day. Most of the hiking is single track well marked trails. We can expect typical PA spring conditions of sun or rain or snow and cool to near freezing night temps. So bring clothing and sleeping gear for the entire range of conditions. Footing will most likely be wet in the valley so waterproof footwear is recommended. There is no potable water available so plan on making your own. Registration Required.
This is Dave's second qualifying colead to become a leader, so let's make this memorable for him!!
