Right now, we are aiming for the Upper Winni, which offers an easy warmup run starting as Quickwater, becoming Class I, ending as Class II above Riverfront Park in Tilton. If the water level falls too low, we'll move to the Pemi Bristol section below Ayers Island Dam which is Class II all the way, ending in a Class III drop which can be avoided. In either case, this will be a fun, mellow trip. You'll need a whitewater-capable kayak or canoe with flotation and a sprayskirt (for a kayak), clothing for cold water (drysuit or wetsuit with fleece and a dry top), plus a helmet (not a bike helmet) and PFD.
The ACA offers this definition of Class II rapids: "Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels which are evident without scouting. Occasional maneuvering may be required, but rocks and medium-sized waves are easily missed by trained paddlers. Swimmers are seldom injured and group assistance, while helpful, is seldom needed. Rapids that are at the upper end of this difficulty range are designated "Class II+".
