Overview

The Androscoggin River is one of the very few options in New England with guaranteed water flow in the summer. Dam releases at Pontook begin at 10am on weekends. We will definitely run the Pontook section several times. This is a short (2.4 mile) run with four longish Class II rapids. An easy shuttle makes it possible to do multiple runs in one day. Chances are high we will see eagles, herons and ospreys while paddling this section (there's an active osprey nest on a power pole right beside the river). If enough paddlers are interested, we can also make a quick side trip to Errol Rapids, which is a great spot to work on specific skills. There are also many relaxing quiet-water paddling options in the are but these would be on-your-own as this trip will focus on whitewater. Recent graduates of whitewater schools are more than welcome. We will pace each run to the participant's needs. Paddlers will need a whitewater-capable canoe or kayak with flotation and the skills to maneuver confidently in swift-flowing current around rocks, holes, and waves high enough to splash your face. Rentals are available from NH AMC (http://www.nhamcpaddlers.org/rentals.html) but arrangements must be made in advance. Kayaks must have a tight-fitting sprayskirt or your boat will swamp. All paddlers must wear a helmet and PFD at all times while on the water. There are numerous camping and lodging options in the area but vacancies can be scarce on summer weekends. If enough people sign up soon enough,we can look for campsites (several were still available as this was posted) but there are no guarantees.

The AMC was there for me when I wanted to learn how to paddle a kayak on whitewater. Now I'm leading trips to give others the same opportunity.
