Overview

Join myself and our guide Malcolm Gregory, on a spectacular hike on one of Europe's premier long distance hiking routes. We have planned a trip that will take you on a wonderful hiking journey with stunning views, enchanting villages, scrumptious cuisine, and plenty of flora and fauna. The Lechweg Trail follows the River Lech for almost 78 miles, from its spring near the Formarinsee lake in Austria to the Lechfall Waterfall in Fussen, Germany. It is one of only twelve long distance hiking routes in Europe certified by the European Ramblers Association as "Leading Quality Trails - Best in Europe.'' Carl Rosenthal told me that "the scenery is spectacular, the trails are well maintained, and the hotels and meals are the best of the many trips I have been on." Starting from the Formarinsee Lake in Austria to the Lechfall Waterfall in Füssen in Germany, our route includes days in the high mountains high above the river valley, as well as days in the valley wending our way through pretty villages on good paths and tracks. The villages in the Lechtal Valley are famous throughout Tyrol for their elaborate frescos painted on the facades of farmhouses. Dating back to the 18th century, they show scenes from everyday farm life and stories from the Bible. Holzgau has a particularly large number of these paintings. The Lechweg crosses over the longest-span swing bridge in Austria and leads to the royal castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in Neuschwanstein. This trip is rated moderate to vigorous. The hikes range in length from 4 - 13 miles, for 2 ½ - 6 hours of hiking per day, not counting breaks. The highest elevation we will be at is about 8,300 feet. The greatest total daily ascent will be approximately 2,300 feet, and the greatest total daily descent about 3,700 feet. 1,500 feet elevation gain and 2,300 feet loss will be our typical daily average. The trip will be a total of 12 nights (guided) with baggage transfers between the hotels. There will be 9 hiking days and 2 days off with accommodations in 3* and 4* hotels (9 nights with bed, breakfast & dinner and 3 nights bed & breakfast).
