When trees are starkly bare in New England and skies dreary, come enjoy warm days and cooler nights in the warmth of Southern Arizona deserts. We'll walk in the sun while enjoying the soft sounds of the desert breezes whispering through Saguaro cactus. But we'll also look down from 9,100 feet atop the Mt. Lemmon sky island and wend our way through the amazing rock formations of Chiricahua National Monument. Our daily itinerary will include moderate hikes in canyons, on peaks and among unusual rock formations. They will range from a few hundred feet elevation gain to maximum 1700 feet. The longest single hike is 7 miles. When appropriate, we will combine 2 shorter hikes in a day to mix up the places we'll visit and also to allow for a shady lunch on hottest days between hikes. To make sure we have some understanding of the local culture, flora and fauna we'll visit the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, a world-class zoo/botanical garden/museum/art gallery, and Saguaro National Park headquarters. Accommodations will be in a good quality hotel (2 to a room) in the greater Tucson area which includes breakfast and provides refrigerators to store our lunch fixings and snacks. Your leaders and volunteer drivers will transport you everywhere in minivans from airport pickup to drop off. Four group dinners are also included in the trip price.
