This two-day session will focus on the skills that every Class 2-3 whitewater trip leader should practice to proficiency. We will be creating realistic scenarios and practicing basic techniques for the swiftwater rescues commonly encountered on Class 2 and Class 3 runs. Topics may include: • Safety check before setting out • Incident scene management • Swimming in whitewater • Self rescue • Boat rescue of swimmers • Floating boat recovery • Floating equipment recovery • Throw rope rescues (both pre-positioned and on-the-fly) • Debriefing No one will be standing around watching; you will be expected to actively participate as both victim and rescuer. Please come prepared to spend a good part of the day IN the water. You will be intentionally capsizing and exiting your boat and swimming in rocky rapids. Requirements include a whitewater-capable boat with sprayskirt and flotation. You'll also need a PFD, helmet, and whistle. Helmet and PFD must be worn and secured at all times while on or near the water. Be sure your footwear has sturdy soles that will grip on wet rocks, closed-toes (rocks are sharp and there's often broken glass around), and will stay on your feet when you swim. Bring a throw bag (everyone should have one) and any other rescue equipment you normally carry (tow tether, carabiners, pin kit, etc.). If you own or have access to a rescue PFD with a quick-release belt, please bring that. We will have some extras to lend. You may also want gloves, noseplugs and insect protection. Lunch will be along the river; bring adequate food and water for all day. Notes: The location given is tentative; we will go where water conditions are best. Please register even if the trip is waitlisted.
