Have you ever wondered what it's like to paddle a kayak on a turbulent river? This is your chance to "test the waters" in a supported environment with experienced volunteer coaches. Day 1: TBD: Flatwater and easy Class 1 and 2 rapids We'll start the morning on dry land where you'll get fitted in a kayak, stretch, and practice the moves needed to successfully get out of your kayak should you flip. • Anyone who has not executed a wet exit prior to this session will have to demonstrate proficiency before being allowed to proceed. We will make every effort to get you this training and demonstration beforehand. We'll then launch on flat water to introduce the basic paddle strokes and edging skills needed to direct your kayak around obstacles. Topics will include: • sweep strokes and draw strokes (to steer your boat) • forward and backward strokes (to propel your kayak where you want it to go) • leaning and edging (to help your boat turn and keep it stable in current) In the afternoon, we'll move into gentle currents to learn: • reading whitewater (figuring out where you want to go) • basic whitewater safety (getting yourself and your gear to shore in the event of a swim) • ferrying (crossing a current without getting pulled downstream) • eddy peel out (getting into the current without flipping) • eddy entry (getting out of the current without flipping) • wave surfing At the end of the day, everyone will have the option to run a short Class 2 rapid. Day 2: Location TBD: run a Class 2 river, practicing and solidifying all the skills you learned on Day 1. Safety is our top priority: all participants must wear a PFD (life vest) and a helmet when on or near the water. Whitewater paddling often includes swimming in swift currents and cold, turbulent water, around rocks and other obstacles; strong swimming ability is a prerequisite for this class. On Day 2, all learners will be encouraged to swim in a Class 2 rapid. If you do not have a boat we will provide one that fits you. Boat rental is included in the course fee. No discounts or refunds if you have your own boats or drop out after the course begins. We will work with you to ensure you have the proper clothing, footwear, sprayskirt, helmet, and PFD needed for comfort and safety. Participant numbers are limited. If the class is full, please sign up for the waitlist.
