Overview

Embark on an unforgettable adventure as we journey into the heart of the White Mountains and attempt a summit of the famed Mount Washington. Led by experienced AMC Guides, this overnight hike to Mt. Washington and Lakes of the Clouds Hut will provide opportunities for breathtaking vistas and adventure and is a chance to connect with nature, foster friendships, and challenge oneself, all within a supportive and encouraging community. Our journey will begin at AMC's Joe Dodge Lodge, a cozy and welcoming base where the group will meet for the first time. This initial meeting is a chance to connect as a group and the guides will review the plan for the weekend, expectations, safety protocol, gear, weather conditions, etc. and will be a chance to make sure everyone is feeling confident and prepared about the trip to come. For those needing equipment, we have gear available to borrow at no extra cost. The next morning, the group will set off on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and ascend 3.1 miles to Lakes of the Clouds Hut. The first two miles ascend gently though the Northern Hardwood Forest with cascading streams and waterfalls. The last mile to the hut presents a steep, rocky ascent, but views open up as we enter the alpine zone and reach the Hut. Along the way, guides share their wealth of knowledge about the flora, fauna, and history of the region, enriching the experience with fascinating insights and stories. After arriving at Lakes of the Clouds, we'll have plenty of time to explore the unique plants and pristine alpine lakes around the hut before dinner. If timing and weather allows, we can attempt to climb the nearby summit of Mt. Washington in the afternoon or the next morning. Nestled amidst the rugged ridgeline above the trees, the hut offers a cozy refuge where we can rest, recharge, and reflect on the day's adventures. We'll enjoy a hearty family style dinner with sweeping sunset views and rest for the night in the all-gender shared bunkrooms. In the morning, we will depart the Hut after breakfast and descend to the trailhead, where we will return to the Highland Center for farewells. Join us on this extraordinary adventure, where supportive atmosphere, knowledgeable guides, and connection with nature converge to create an experience unlike any other! *This trip involves difficult hiking on steep, rocky terrain. Weather can change quickly and become quite cold and windy above tree line. Participants should be in good hiking shape, have proper hiking boots and clothing and come prepared with a spirit of adventure!*

Past participants say...

"My trip was great. Couldn't make it better! Both guides were excellent and fun. Very friendly- obvious that they love what they do!" Participant, July 2016 "I really enjoyed the descent in the windy rainy conditions. I'd normally not go day-hiking in these conditions, but this trip showed me that I could do it and still be comfortable." Participant, July 2016
