Overview

We will paddle out and back from Bordentown Beach, approximately 8-9 miles, riding the tide most of the way. We will be on the water for about three to five hours, pending the amount of exploration of the marshes and wetlands along the way. Some basic to intermediate paddle skills are needed to navigate along this adventure. For our friends from NYC or Philly, getting to the adventure is a breeze. Simply arrive by NJ Transit Train at the put-in and use the kayaks provided by D&R Greenway Trust Kayaking. Please note that a limited number of boats are available, so contact the leader for more details. Crosswicks Creek is a 25.3-mile-long tributary of the Delaware River that winds its way upriver through marshland and eventually narrows about 5 miles inland. This is a tidal creek at the lower end (the section we will be paddling) with a strong current at times. Prepare to be captivated by the wide vistas and the dominance of aquatic plants. As you journey upriver, the hardwood uplands will gradually come into view. The Atlantic Ocean tidal freshwater marshes along Crosswicks Creek and Watson's Creek are beautiful and among the most productive ecosystems in the world, rivaling tropical rainforests in the amount of plant production each year. This marsh is a haven for diverse plant and animal life and a rich history of human inhabitants. The creek has a long history. During the Revolutionary War, boats were sunk in Crosswicks Creek to prevent them from falling into the hands of the British. Additionally, Joseph Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon, lived at Point Breeze from 1816 to 1837. Efforts to uncover the creek's cultural history are ongoing. Don't miss out on this exciting paddling Adventure! Remember, registration is required. Once registered, you'll receive a detailed 'Dope Sheet' about a week before the paddle, ensuring you're well-prepared for the event. Paddling is a water sport. The trip will go in light rain. The paddle will be canceled if a 70% chance of thunderstorms and/or hard rain is predicted.
