Overview

Embark on a unique journey through time and nature as we paddle through the historical Mt. Holly, traverse the Oxbow, circle the Timbuctoo Historic way point, explore the State of NJ Natural Area, and follow the Rancocas State Park Water Trail (RCWT) of the North Branch of the Rancocas Creek. We'll pass by Melpine Landing and enter the confluence into the main stem of Rancocas Creek, offering a truly exceptional experience. Experience a different perspective of Rancocas Creek's main branch. As we pass under the NJ Turnpike (between exits 4 and 5), Rt. 295 (between exits 43 and 45) and Rt. 130, you'll witness tidal marshes, Pine Barrens cedar water, sandbars, backwaters, expansive vistas, and rich wildlife, including eagles, hawks, and herons. This is blackwater paddling at its finest. Launching and rounding the first bend in Mt. Holly, you'll realize the unique, remote, and enjoyable nature of paddling the Rancocas Creek. It's a journey back in time, reaching the semi-wild confluence of the North and South Branch in solitude. The unstated beauty of the local resources of Rancocas Creek is genuinely appreciable. Four hundred years of maritime heritage anchor the Creek, and paddling allows you to touch this heritage literally and figuratively. Explore Horsehead Point, Shallop blockades, creekside distilleries, the underground railroad at Timbuctoo, Native American sites, and the remains of mid-1800s sailing vessels stuck in the mud. As you paddle down, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the so-called featureless creek. Paddling on the Rancocas Creek Water Trail (RCWT) tidal sections increases the risks of tidal waters, so it's crucial to stay alert for others. Rancocas Creek is a bustling destination for jet skis, motorized boats, hunters, trappers, and anglers. Different water levels can dramatically change your views along the RCWT. The tidal reaches of the river are more suited for intermediate and expert paddlers. Remember, you paddle at your own discretion. Paddling is a water sport, and we will paddle in light summer rain. However, the trip is canceled in high winds, heavy rain, or if 70% or more of thunderstorms are predicted for prolonged periods of the paddle.
