Overview

This is an introductory course on coastal kayak navigation. The focus is on learning the fundamentals of coastal navigation and developing the "hands on" skills required for the advanced beginner to intermediate sea kayaker to safely navigate in coastal waters. Topics include tides & currents, trip planning, reading and using a nautical chart, the features of and effective use of a baseplate compass, navigation by compass, buoys/aids to navigation and safety. The course consists of four learning components: (1) Four hours of on-line learning prior to the weekend at Knubble Bay Camp (KBC). (2) Three hours of hands-on skills practice Saturday morning at KBC. (3) Seven hours of "on water" paddling fun and navigation practice Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. (4) Over the weekend, there will be ample opportunities to ask questions and receive one-on-one help from the two instructors. There is also a fifth component, HAVING FUN! The course is taught at the AMC's beautiful waterfront Knubble Bay Camp (KBC) in Georgetown, ME. We will launch our kayaks from the beach on the property. Located at KBC is an "off the grid", open concept, post and beam cabin. The cabin has a large deck overlooking the water, a great place to relax, socialize or enjoy your favorite beverage. On the first floor is a large kitchen that includes a refrigerator, stove and oven. Also on that floor is a dining area and living space to relax or socialize. A large upstairs bunk room has terrific views of the water. Bring bedding and a pillow if you'd like to sleep in the cabin (secure a spot when you register-first-come-first-served). If you prefer, sleep outside under the stars and wake to the call of the loons. Outside there are two tent platforms and ample level ground for tents. For more information on Knubble Bay Camp and the cabin, go to: https://amckbc.org/ (Copy & past this link into your browser address bar) Navigation weekend is open to advanced beginner, intermediate and advanced paddlers. You must have experience paddling in the ocean, not just a lake, river or tidal area. To register for this exciting weekend, click on the REGISTER NOW box above. On the web page you are directed to, scroll down to "Intro to Coastal Navigation". There you will find the detailed program description and the registration form. If you don't have a sea kayak or the necessary sea kayaking gear, no problem. There is information on renting in the in the detailed program description.
