Come practice, learn and expand your whitewater skills in a friendly, low key, river environment. "Weekly Wednesday Practice" whitewater sessions run from the beginning of spring through the end of summer. These sessions last several hours, from 4pm to sunset. You can come and go when you want, and work at your own pace on various skills. No formal car shuttle. Location will be one rapid with good features, or a short river stretch (less than a mile) with several rapids. So it will be possible to run multiple laps. The river location varies. Several sections of the Farmington River will be the primary location. But the Housatonic, Salmon, Natchaug, Scantic, and Naugatuck Rivers are all possibilities, too. It depends on what river section has the best water, and to add some variety. Difficulty will range from Class 2 to Class 3. These sessions are great for practicing many different skills: basic strokes (power, turning, bracing), river running maneuvers (peel outs, eddy turns, ferries, and attainments), playboating (surfing, spinning, squirting, stalls), and rolling in different river conditions (flatwater, moving water, small features, bigger features). The most important benefit is the repetition. Like other sports, repeating essential things over and over is the best way to improve your skills. Informal instruction will be available, including rolling. Whitewater boat (kayak, canoe, raft, SUP) and all gear (paddle, life jacket, helmet, floatation bags, sprayskirt). Must have appropriate clothing and footwear to match the river's water temperature (as always, "Dress for the swim!). Hope to see you there! Contact leader to register.
