This gear shakedown is the next step in the Worcester Chapter's Inner Backpacker program for new backpackers. At this shakedown, our experienced leaders will inspect and evaluate your gear, make gear recommendations, and answer your questions. The group will then pack up and hike (under five miles) to a mock campsite, where we'll select tent spots, pitch tents, hang bear bags, filter water, cook a meal, and practice other key back-country skills. The leaders will guide and advise as we go. Participants do not need to have all gear, but should bring what they have. You may register for this Gear Shakedown now, but attendance is contingent on (1) completing the Worcester Chapter's Backpacking Workshop on May 4, and (2) passing a basic screening procedure, which the leader will send you after you register (experience hiking up to five miles with a pack, etc.). The event will take place in Douglas State Forest and begin at 8:45 a.m. Exact location and other details will be provided after registration is confirmed.
