Join us for the annual celebration of the summer solstice at Wachusett Mountain. Easy-to-average with some strenuous terrain at a moderate pace (1.5-2mph) for 3-4 miles. Approximately a 900' elevation gain. We may see Mt. Greylock (3,491') as the the sun sets in the west and Boston as the moon rises in the east. This is an evening/night hike. Headlamps are required. We will split the larger group into 2 groups that will take separate routes to the summit. After the sun sets, we will offer 2 options to return to the trailhead 1). via the paved summit road to Administration Rd. which is a mix of old pavement and dirt so the ground is uneven or 2). via trails. Be prepared to stay up at the summit for 1 1/2 to 2 hours as we celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice. Bring layers to keep you warm from head to toe and a pad to sit on so the ground does not drain your body of heat. A cozy blanket or down quilt may be a welcome addition to your regular hiking gear. Optionally, bring a favorite food to share with the group. No worries if you feel uncomfortable sharing food in a group setting. The burning question is, which cookies shall Cookie Monster bake this year??? Don't worry - the cookies will NOT be burnt :). Bring water, snacks, trail dinner, bug spray, headlamp with fresh batteries, layers, and a pack large enough to carry your gear. Limited to 20, including the leaders, prepared, hiking-fit, fun-loving, summer solstice celebrants! Rain (lightning) cancels.
