This small group of participants will spend the entire weekend on navigational skills, using GAIA GPS smart phone app (which should be downloaded before the workshop). This App is similar to All Trails, and is preferred by hikers seeking a greater level of understanding and GPS use. Topics will include: reading the GAIA GPS map; learning the parts of the app using the app to plan a route; identifying all the features to be seen along the way; using GAIA GPS app indoors as a tool to plan a route; outside instruction and activities to practice skills, putting all the pieces together and laying out a bushwhack route; find your position or identify distant mountains or lakes from a high view point. The group will complete their learning by going out and following the bushwhack route. Also included will be review of Map and Compass fundamentals, and general mountain hiking safety, clothing, equipment. Intended for individuals with high interest in learning GAIA GPS phone app skills. Anticipate hiking as much as 4 miles at a slow pace with occasional uphill grades. This workshop will begin promptly at 7:30pm on Friday evening, ending Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:30pm. Must be 18 years or older to attend.
