Cross the border into Southern N.H. to run the upper reaches of this scenic river. There is no white water on this trip, but the first part of the river has strong current and some large rocks around which we need to maneuver. There may be portages around fallen trees that block the river from bank to bank. One is at the lunch spot where the best portage is a landing on river left on the right side of the island just before the blockage. Here and there we encounter trees that have fallen in the water and have partially blocked the way so that we need to maneuver through narrow passages between the tree limbs or between the tree and the bank. Fallen trees present a risk of pinning a canoe or kayak and/or a paddler in or under the water. Skilled watercraft maneuvering is required. The distance from the put in to Cavender Road bridge is about 6.25 miles. The distance from Cavender Road bridge to our usual take out at the boat ramp at Greenfield State Park by Forest Road is 1.6 miles. A few kayaks and a canoe are available for loan to those without access to one. Well in advance and after registering and being accepted for the event contact [email protected] with your loan request, cc'ing the leader.
