Join us for a moderately-paced gravel path bicycle ride on the Newtown Rail Trail in Bucks County and the Pennypack Trail in Montgomery County. 8 - 11 avg mph (D pace), about 17 miles out and back. We will meet at 10:00 am at the trailhead at the old Southampton Train Station, 613 Second Street Pike. We will pause for a short break on the return leg at Lorimar Park (bring water and a snack). The flat to slightly rolling paved and crushed stone trails follow the path of the former SEPTA Newtown / Fox Chase commuter rail line. Phase 1 of the NRT runs from Bristol Rd to County Line Rd, where it joins the Pennypack Trail, which runs to Rockledge Borough. The trails provide scenic views of the Pennypack Creek Valley woodlands along its route. These popular trails are multi-use and busy road crossings are controlled by automated signals. A hybrid or wide-tire road bike in good repair is suitable for this ride. Please check your tires for condition and proper air pressure. Check your bicycle chain and brakes as well. A wise cyclist always carries a spare tube and tools. HELMET REQUIRED. Steady rain cancels the ride. If in doubt, contact leaders by 7:30 am the day of the ride. Should there be interest, at the conclusion of the ride we can have lunch at the Steam Pub, 606 Second Street Pike, across from the trailhead in Southampton. Contact leaders with any questions.
