4-5 Mile hike from Rte. 66 over Mt. Higby on the Mattabesett Trail to Tynan Memorial Park using the Blue/Red Connector Trail. NOTE: This hike qualifies as part of the CFPA's NET Hike 50 Challenge Program. Good views from the Mt. Higby ridgeline and a potential side trip to the site of a 1954 plane crash as well as a nearby Leatherman's Cave. A few steep rock scrambles at the start. Pole(s) may be useful for trap rock scree along the trail or, depending on water levels, for one of the wider stream crossings. Meet at the Tynan Memorial Park lot on Higby Road at 9:15 for a prompt 9:30 AM start. Short car spot required to Rte. 66 trail head. Co-leaders are welcome. Steady Rain cancels. DIRECTIONS: (GPS Ref.: 129 Higby Rd., Middletown, CT) From I-91, take Exit 20 (Country Club Road). Follow Country Club Road East about 1.0 mile to Jct. with Higby Road. Take Higby Rd. South about 0.6 mile to parking lot on right (just before 3 way stop sign at Sisk St.). From Rte. 66, at stoplight, take Higby Rd. North about 0.6 mile to 3 way stop sign at Sisk St. Parking lot will be just beyond stop sign on the left.
