We will paddle for a few hours (ending by 10 pm), watching the sunset on the lake, enjoying the full moonlight, and exploring different parts of Farrington Lake, a serene and tranquil freshwater reservoir that is nestled on the border of North Brunswick and East Brunswick, NJ. This long, narrow lake provides an intimate setting that lets you be close to nature. Wildlife abounds here with goldfinch, cardinals, wrens, warblers, blue jays, and other songbirds seeking refuge among the trees, while sunfish, perch, and catfish swim in the waters alongside stocked trout and bass. During the day, you can also look for big turtles sunning themselves on the rocks. Electric outboards are permitted, but most fishing is done from the shore. The lake's calm waters connect to Davidson's Mill Pond to the south and Lawrence Brook, Westons Mill Pond, and the Raritan River to the north, offering a peaceful paddling experience. The lake is, in fact, an eight-mile-long widened section of the Lawrence Brook, which covers about 290 acres and has a mean depth of 6.6 feet and a maximum depth of 13 feet. The lake is accessible from only a couple of choices of boat ramps; the only powered boats allowed are those with an electric motor. We will put in at the Farrington Lake Small Boat Launch situated approximately in the middle of the lake. A minimal level of paddling experience is required for you to participate in this trip, but you must be comfortable controlling your boat in adverse situations if they happen to arise. No novice paddlers, please. Your safety is our top priority. Please bring a stern light (preferably not white) attached to your boat so we can track your location. We will only use headlights if necessary (but please bring at least one). Hopefully, the moon will shine bright on a clear night so that our paddle can clearly navigate without using our headlights. This paddle will be canceled in inclement weather conditions. A go/no-go decision will be made by 5 pm the night before the paddle. Please bring layers, as it will get cooler as the night progresses. Please register for the paddle at least three days in advance.
