This program is designed for 3 season hikers interested in getting out in winter and gaining skills to be able to do this on their own. Weekend includes both indoor and outdoor sessions. Program Highlights: •Participants will learn how to prepare for winter hikes •Route planning (terrain considerations, weather considerations, timing) •What to carry (10 essentials plus winter considerations and tips for staying warm) •What to wear (appropriate clothing, layering) •Types of gear (snowshoes, traction, poles) •Hypothermia and Frostbite prevention •Participants will learn basic use of snowshoes, poles, and traction •Participants will learn basic map reading and compass use •Participants will learn about snow shelters •Participants will learn basic winter ecology and wildlife tracking along the way during hikes Sample Itinerary: Friday: Check in and Pre-Trip Meeting Check in to the lodge any time after 3pm. 6:00pm Dinner 7:30pm Welcome & Orientation to AMC Winter Skills 101 overview Saturday: Our Adventure Begins! 6:30am-8amBuffet breakfast 8:30amGroup Meeting & Pack up AMHow to dress for winter/ hydration and nutrition / PMTraction/ what to use and when Snowshoe Clinic & Snowshoe Hike 5:00pmFireside Social Hour 6:00pm Dinner 8:00pm Featured Evening Program Sunday: Final Adventure and Wrap-Up 6:30am-8amBuffet breakfast 8:30amGroup Meeting & Pack up AMMap and Compass 101 / Half Day Snowshoe Hike, Focus on Navigation 12pmLunch, farewells!
