Noble View Outdoor Center, Russell, MA,
Massachusetts, Pioneer Valley,
This Volunteer Trail crew will work on the trails surrounding AMC's 350-acre Noble View Outdoor Center. This program is ideal for beginners who are interested in hiking and trail work, but have limited prior experience in both. The crew will live at AMC's Noble View Campsites, situated close to the main lodge along the wooded edge of a large field. Campsites include tenting areas, fire ring, and a common party tent area with picnic tables for eating meals. The crew will have access to the centralized bath house with flush toilets, showers, and dishwashing facilities. The program begins on Sunday afternoon with an orientation and dinner at AMC's Noble View. Each weekday morning after breakfast, the crew will hike to a nearby trail to work on trail reconstruction and maintenance projects. The projects may involve clearing brush to better define the trail, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges, repairing ski trails, painting blazes, and other crucial conservation tasks. Please remember that while we work within the abilities and comfort of the group, the nature of hiking and trail work is strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine. It is certainly not all work though. Your crew will spend time playing cards, tossing the Frisbee, taking hikes and even go for a swim in the emerald pools of Noble View's Pitcher Falls. All of the food for the week is included in the program cost, as are tents and other shared camping equipment. Crew members all get their turn cooking quesadillas, pasta feasts, and other backcountry delicacies for the team. All participants assist with meal preparation and will learn to cook quality meals at the campsite. After dinner and cleanup, the crew plays games, tells stories, and discusses conservation and environmental ethics - but most of all they just kick back and enjoy the evening.
From the North or South: Take Route 91 to Exit 14 (Route 90 - Mass Pike), and travel west on the Mass Pike to Exit 3. From the East or West: Take the Mass Pike to Exit 3 (Westfield.) Go through the tollbooth. Turn right at the traffic light to go south on Southampton Road (Route 10 & 202), into Westfield. Travel about 1.7 miles, and turn right onto Court Street (following Route 10 & 202). Landmarks at this intersection are the Athenaeum (a library) and Westfield Common (a park). When Route 10 & 202 takes a left in front of Berkshire Bank, you continue straight ahead (not on 10 & 202) on Court Street. Court Street becomes Western Avenue and passes Stanley Park on the left and Westfield State College on the right. Continue straight ahead at the fork on Western Ave. (3.0 miles from the Common). Do not bear right at the fork onto what appears to be the main road (Bates Road). Cross through the intersection at Northwest Road and start up the mountain on General Knox Road. Follow General Knox Road and turn left onto South Quarter Road at the historic General Knox marker in the small triangular common (2nd road on the left once you start up the mountain, 3.2 miles from the fork). Turn left into Noble View (1.2 miles from General Knox road). Go up the entry road until you reach the facility.
