Overview

Join us for an opportunity to focus on the scenery of Zealand Valley. Our journey to Zealand Falls Hut takes us to the Pemigewasset Wilderness, through hardwood forests and beaver ponds and over ridges offering spectacular views. After an introductory meeting and comfortable night's lodging at AMC's Highland Center, we gear up for our backcountry adventure. Backcountry lodging and hearty meals are provided at AMC's Zealand Falls Hut. We begin our hike along the abandoned logging railroad bed of Zealand Valley where 100 years ago the valley was actively logged for timber. The trail is easier with a final steep pitch at the end of the day. The next day we have options to take in the scenery of the wetlands and valley floor or a view from above on the Zeacliff Trail. SAMPLE ITINERARY Day one: Dinner and pre hike meeting at Highland Center Day two: After a hearty breakfast we begin the hike to Zealand Falls Hut. Options include: A-Z Trail: 5.5 miles total, including 2100 feet elevation gain, then 1300 feet elevation loss. 5-6 hours. Zealand Falls Trail: 2.7 miles. The trail climbs approximately 800 ft over 2.7 miles. We should arrive with time to explore Zealand Valley or relax by the falls before dinner. Day three: From the hut we will climb approximately 1000ft to Zeacliff and then continue along the Twinway Trail to Zealand Mountain to summit a 4,000ft peak. Or if the group chooses we will retrace the path of the Zealand Railroad to Thoreau Falls, a round trip of 5 miles of fairly level terrain. Day four: We hike the 2.7miles from AMC's backcountry Zealand Falls Hut to the trailhead. We will be transported by van back to the Highland Center.
