Sterling Forest Hike, Doris Duke Wildlife Sanctuary and Appalachian Trail 2C6(H)

Date and Time

Saturday, April 1, 2017, 10:15AM - 3:30PM

Sterling Forest,
New York, Hudson River Valley,

Registration is not required for this activity. However, you may wish to contact the leader(s) if you have any questions.

We will hike the Doris Duke Trail in the Doris Duke Wildlife Sanctuary in Sterling Forest. The route will consist of this 3 1/2 mile loop trail and an additional  section on the Appalachian Trail to Mombasha High Point and back. The route is a relatively short one and will proceed at the faster end of the level 2 rather than the faster pace level 3 that I usually lead at. There is a long steep section near the beginning where we ascend to the Sterling Ridge. The Doris Duke Trail is shown on 2013 and later Trail Conference maps. Meet at Tuxedo Park and Ride (Rte 17 and 17A) at 10.14 a.m. Transportation code 1D but uses later bus 9.10 from Port Authority. Short car shuttle to trailhead. Rain cancels but showers OK.  L. I have been leading hikes for the AMC since 2008, mainly in the Wyanokies and other areas of the New Jersey Highlands and also Sterling Forest and Storm King State Park in NY. I lead hikes in all seasons. Future hikes will include these and other destinations west of the Hudson. Distance and terrain vary according to hike location and season and may be 2C, 2D, 3C or 3D. Most of my hikes do not require preregistration. However you may always call or email if you have questions.
