New Jersey, Central,

Registration is required for this activity.

Kayak or canoe downriver on the south branch of the Raritan River from the town of Three Bridges, NJ to Old York Road in Branchburg, NJ. The 10-mile paddle will take around 4 to 5 hours with fairly steady but relaxed paddling with a lunch stop. This section of river flows through open space, sparse woods, and old fields, with lots bird life. This will be a black water paddle with one waterfall/class II rapid to navigate or go around, plus a few class 1 ripples as the river meanders around many bends in a steady easy current. Basic Paddling Skills Required. Must know how to steer, turn a boat and paddle in a straight line. PFDs will be worn at all times as requirement of the trip. The downriver trip will end where South Branch joins the North Branch to become the Raritan River proper. Early out option at lunch stop about half-way. Arrive at put-in by 11:00 am. Be ready for a shuttle by 11:30 pm. This will get us on the river by 12:30 pm or earlier. This trip will be postponed or canceled if there is heavy rain, 70% chance or better pending heavy thunderstorms, or water level that is below 4.0 or above 9.0 feet, as per USGS 01397420 Gauge. Kayaking is all weather sport so we will go in light rain. Your RSVP is REQUIRED at least 2 days before the event. Please call the trip leader after 8 AM on the day of the event to confirm that you are coming and that the trip is on. RENTALS: Available at Bridgewater EMS Store You will need to car-top your own boat to put in. Please call ahead to EMS to make prior arrangements, and you MUST be able to "car-top" the boat to the put-in. EMS is located on the Somerville Circle in Bridgewater, NJ, which is about 10 miles and 20 minutes away from the put-in.
