Massachusetts, Pioneer Valley,
HIKE DESCRIPTION: This is a loop hike that follows a number of trails in the park, including some trails that follow along the shoreline of the reservoir. The hike includes a stop at the Quabbin tower and numerous overlooks with views of the reservoir. Hiking distance is about 9 miles. Hiking pace is moderate (1.5 to 2 mph). TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Moderate. Although a lot of the hike is relatively level, there is a fairly continuous, but mostly gradual, 2-3 mile climb to the Quabbin Tower (and then a downhill for a while after that). The trails vary from being a bit rough (a few trees lying across the trail and uneven footing) to relatively easy (where the trail follows old dirt roads). HIKE RATING: 9 miles, average terrain, moderate pace. Overall rating - intermediate. OTHER INFO: Group size is limited. When you contact the leader, please provide the leader with a brief description of your recent (last 2 months) hikes (distances, terrain type) or other equivalent activity. NOTE to those that did my March 23 or April 20 Quabbin hike: This hike is very similar to those hikes in that a lot of the trails are the same. The main differences are that this hike is a loop hike (vs a car shuttle), we will not be going to the Goodnough dike side of the park, and, of course, we should have more springlike weather.
