Saturday, August 26, 2017, 8:45AM - 4:00PM
Holtwood Rd Airville, PA 17302,
This is hike 1 of 2 to review the most difficult course sections for the 2017 KTA Trail Challenge (formerly Susquehanna Super Hike). We will travel "fast and light" style and will cover the 50K course section (if you are doing the 25K you will not be using this section). This trek is appropriate for AMC members and for 50K participants targeting a sustained pace of 3 mph (not a race day pace). This is a particularly interesting section of the Conestoga Trail but we will only be pausing at intersections to maintain group unity. Rest stops will be limited if any and everyone should plan to eat on the go as you will on race day. Hikers should be comfortable with wet summer creek crossings without need to stop and take off shoes and change socks, etc. While this event is intended to help race participants formulate strategy and develop familiarity with the inclines and fast sections it is open to any card-carrying AMC members to whom this hike appeals. Registration for this trek event does not register participation in the KTA Trail Challenge. A link to the registration site is included in the section Additional Information. For those unfamiliar, the Keystone Trails Association is Pennsylvania's regional trails advocate. See the web site for additional course details, maps and Trail Challenge logistics and support information. We will meet in the parking lot for the Lock 12 historic site at 8:45 AM (GPS 39.812183255, -76.3290621). From the meeting point we will car pool to the village of Pequea where we will commence our hike. We will complete 13 miles (21 Km of the 23.km) excluding the flat beginning out of the Pequea Camp Ground. There are some very steep and rocky descents with extremely poor footing especially towards the end of the hike when you will be most tired. This hike will not be cancelled in the event of bad weather. Bring a minimum of two liters of water and food that can be consumed while traveling. Sorry, no dogs on this one.
