This is a great day trip and hike within 1 hr 45 minutes from KOP to kick off your Fourth of July Weekend. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred on July 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 1863. The battlefield itself occupies an area of approximately 16 square miles and extends north, west and south of the town of Gettysburg. Please join me as we walk and take the time to appreciate the pivotal moments that formed the infamous second day of engagement. These include; The Wheatfield, The Peach Orchard; Big Round Top; Little Round Top; Plum Run; East Cemetery Hill and, of course, Devils Den. In addition we will stop at the Angle which received the brunt of Pickett's Charge and take a few minutes to "explore" the impressive Pennsylvania monument. My apologies if this might seem at times to be a tour of monuments to Irish regiments but they're a little difficult to avoid :) As they say, when the going gets tough... This event is appropriate for New Members, families and people new to hiking. Children should have experience walking several miles and be accompanied by a parent. We will make provision for early drop out points closer to the event. The meeting point will be PARKING LOT THREE (3) off Washington Street, north west of the Visitor's Center (GPS 39.811339, -77.228867). Last year parking was abundant at this time in the morning. Distance to be hiked is estimated at around 7-8 miles and will be at variable pace balancing the innumerable points of interest with the group desire to be on the move. We will plan on having lunch at Devil's Den but the itinerary will be flexible and group input is welcome. Trail lunches, snacks, water, sunscreen, water and plenty of water are the essentials. Light hikers or sneakers/trail runners are adequate. A wide brimmed hat and sun glasses will make for a comfortable day also. Bring your camera and binoculars too. Last year I made a full weekend of this event but my sons reenactment schedule prevent me from doing so this year. However, make plans to visit the Visitor's Center and famous cyclorama and take time to experience the sublimity of the Gettysburg National Cemetery where Lincoln gave his inspiring Gettysburg Address.
