Date and Time

Sunday, June 25, 2017

21 Diltz Road, Pomona, NY,
New York, Hudson River Valley,

Registration is not required for this activity. However, you may wish to contact the leader(s) if you have any questions.

RESCHEDULED from Saturday due to weather. This is a very pleasant hike in the southeastern part of Harriman State Park, with moderate climbs for the most part, not as steep as in other areas of the park with the exception of the first hill up the TMI trail, but with very scenic views of the surrounding area, and particularly the New York City skyline from multiple vantage points, including Panther and Catamount Mountains.  The route, primarily on the TMI, SBM and Pine Meadow trails, is a bit off the beaten path, so it is an opportunity to go to an area of the park which you won't see very often. This is a circular hike and at the end we will be able to catch the bus back to NYC, or get a ride back to nearby Suffern. We will hike at a steady, moderate 3 level (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 8 miles, with one fairly steep hill at the  beginning and more moderate ones throughout the day, on hiking trails with varied terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 2000 feet.  There are no special skills or equipment required, other than to wear hiking boots, and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch.  However, hikers should be in good condition to complete a fairly strenuous hike (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise). Rain or even questionable forecast may cancel; check website for latest updates. We meet at the at the parking lot on 21 Diltz Road in Pomona, New York at 10 AM. Bus riders buy a one-way Shortline bus ticket to Pomona Heights, NY (Rt. 202-306) which leaves Port Authority at 8:45 AM (usually from gate 408, and arrive a bit early in case there are long ticket lines) and arrives at 9:47. (This is the same bus that goes to Bear Mountain.) From there (I will be on the bus) we walk on Ladentown Road, make a left on Mountain Road, and then another left on Diltz Road for a short walk to the parking lot, which is right at the TMI trailhead. Drivers may follow the same directions from the junction of routes 202 and 306.
