Spring Hiking in the 100-Mile Wilderness

Late May is a great time to explore AMC's new Gorman Chairback Lodge and Cabins and to help us celebrate spring on our land in Maine's North Woods. An expert naturalist will be on hand to guide you on the best spring hikes the 100-Mile Wilderness has to offer! You'll have the chance to do a challenging yet rewarding hike to Chairback Mountain, where you'll take in spectacular views of the nearby White Cap Mountain Range.

Fly Fishing Workshop - Beginners

This program is for beginner fly fishing anglers or serves as a refresher course for anyone who's interested in dusting off the fly fishing rod and polishing up those beginner skills. On Friday evening, after a hearty home-cooked meal, you'll participate in a workshop on flies, rods, knots and other important fly fishing tools. Then on Saturday morning after breakfast, you'll enjoy a hands-on lesson on handling a fly rod. After that, it's off to the river or pond to fly fish!

Advanced Fly Fishing Workshop

This program is for fly fishing anglers who have already taken our beginner course. On Friday evening, after a hearty home-cooked meal, you'll participate in a workshop on back casting, hauling, double hauling and long casts for accuracy. Then on Saturday morning after breakfast, you'll enjoy a morning session on improving your roll cast, casting in the wind, and mending your line while fishing rivers and streams. After that, it's off to the river and ponds to fly fish! Two instructors will be on hand all day to provide individualized guidance and help improve your skills.

Rock Climbing for Beginners

This two-day program introduces you to basic rock climbing and "top-roping" techniques. The goal of this course is to offer the first time climber (or experienced climbers who would like to learn more about the technical side of climbing systems and climbing techniques) the information and skills that allow you to become comfortable on the rock.

Alpine Garden: A Mountain in Bloom

Join us and discover the world of tiny delicate flowers, hardy plants and remarkable wildlife that survive in a harsh and unpredictable climate. The Presidential Range has some of the most interesting and beautiful alpine plants in America, as well as insects, birds and other wildlife. We will examine and identify a variety of alpine plants and discuss their adaptations that help them to defy the extreme conditions on Mount Washington. We will hike from the Mount Washington Auto Road in the Alpine Garden. Instruction only package is available.

Join us on this hut to hut natural history adventure as we explore the adaptations of plants and animals to live in such a challenging yet stunning environment. The alpine tundra is a rare habitat in New England and the shoulder of Mt Washington and the Presidential Range offer the conditions where alpine plants can survive and even thrive.After an introductory meeting at AMC Highland Center we prepare for a backcountry adventure. Participants will examine the exquisite alpine flowers, discuss alpine adaptations, and compare alpine plant communities.

Mountain Leadership School with Wilderness First Aid

Mountain Leadership School (MLS) is a five-day wilderness leadership training program designed to help you lead groups with minimal impact in the backcountry.

Mountain Leadership School offers a rigorous opportunity to learn about and practice wilderness leadership, so participants must be in good physical condition. The program includes a four-day backpacking adventure - traveling long miles with heavy packs over some of the roughest terrain in the East. Rates include instruction, meals, and lodging.

Outdoor Skills: Land Navigation & Mt. Washington Hike

Ever gotten lost in the woods? Had trouble finding your way with a trail map or compass? This weekend features an 8-hour land navigation course that will take place both in the classroom and the outdoors with navigational skill building and practice sessions throughout the day.

Guided Remote Ponds Fly Fishing Excursion

AMC's 67,000 acres in Maine's North Woods have dozens of remote ponds that are full of wild and native brook trout, and Father's Day Weekend is the perfect time to explore and fish these beautiful spots! Our instructors will provide individualized guidance and help you improve your skills. With this program, you'll receive a box of flies that are known for attracting brook trout in the area. It will be a Father's Day weekend that you will always remember.

50+ Adventure Camp: Highland Lodge and Zealand Falls Hut

These weeklong adventures are designed for active 50+ hikers and feature daily easy to advanced activities including guided hikes, nature walks, and outdoor skills programs. There will also be featured evening programs throughout the week, daily social hours with hors d'oeuvres and beverages, and daily stretching or yoga programs. This spring camp will feature an overnight trip on Thursday night to AMC's Zealand Hut, a beautiful backcountry location.

Teen Wilderness Adventures - 7-Day White Mountain Backpack Experience

Explore some of the most striking mountainous terrain in the East. With several Wilderness areas and world-famous mountain ranges, the 770,000-acre White Mountain National Forest offers some of New England's premier hiking. We'll travel 3 to 8 miles per day while carrying all the camping gear and food we need. We'll camp at a variety of backcountry sites.

Teen Wilderness Adventures - Backcountry Wilderness Intro Adventure

Discover what the excitement is about! Join this Adventure and learn backcountry travel and camping skills, first while backpacking and then travelling by canoe. Our trip will begin with two nights at a backcountry campsite with the middle day spent "peak bagging". Trip planned for ages 13-15.

Teen Wilderness Adventures - Moosehead Lake Fly Fishing and Canoeing Adventure

In this 7-day canoeing adventure, we added the fun and prospect of landing the big one! We'll begin the adventure with 2 days of fly fishing instruction from a local guide. Then, for the remainder of the trip we will travel around Moosehead Lake practicing both our paddling and fishing skills. Trip planned for ages 13-15.
