Winter Climb of Mt. Washington

A comprehensive introduction to winter mountaineering skills. No previous climbing experience is required, but participants should be prepared for a challenging experience. You'll learn how to dress for winter, select and pack the proper gear and campsite, choose food and cook outdoors, and minimize your impact while winter camping. We'll practice moving efficiently in winter boots and crampons and climbing low-to-moderate angled snow and ice terrain.

Ice Climb 101 in Crawford Notch

Learn to ice climb this winter in the White Mountains! The ideal introductory course, our experts will show you how to fit and use crampons safely and give you the opportunity to use ice axes on a variety of terrain. You will tackle lower-angled slabs of ice, learn how to select appropriate climbs, assess risks and hazards, use ice protection, and develop skills needed to safely establish a top-rope ice-climbing site - all in magnificent Crawford Notch. Teen Wilderness Adventures - 4-day Snowshoe Backpack Adventure

Spend the first day practicing your snowshoeing skills in the woods surrounding the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. The following days will take you into the backcountry for a true winter camping experience then end with a night at Carter Notch Hut. 2 Night Guided Lodge-to-Lodge Ski Trek

Enjoy winter at its best on this guided tour of Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness. This is a true backcountry ski trip, and our guided trip is ideal for people who are less comfortable in the backcountry on their own. You'll meet in Greenville and follow a guide to the winter parking lot. From there, you'll ski 7 miles to Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins. Gear will be shuttled in by snowmobile. On the second day you'll ski the Camp-to-Camp Trail 7 miles to Gorman Chairback Lodge and Cabins.

Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain

The Level One Avalanche Program is a 3-day/24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management following standards and guidelines of the American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education. The course is expected to, provide a basic understanding of avalanches, describe a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain, focus on identifying the right questions, rather than on providing "answers", and give lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the field.

The ability to apply basic backcountry first aid is vital for any outdoor enthusiast, whether it's for yourself or others. Moving beyond urban first aid, this course teaches the skills necessary to identify, treat medical issues common to wilderness settings, and to prepare for long-term care scenarios. Minimum age 18 (16 if accompanied by an adult). Package includes lodging, meals, and instruction, handouts and WFA certification with successful completion of course.

SOLO Wilderness First Aid: The ability to apply basic backcountry first aid is vital for any outdoor enthusiast, whether it's for yourself or for others. Moving beyond urban first aid, this course teaches the skills necessary to identify and treat medical issues common to wilderness settings and to prepare for long-term care scenarios. Includes hands-on practice and lectures. Upon completion, participants receive 16-hour Wilderness First Aid certification. This course may be used to recertify a current WFR certification. Minimum age 18.

50+ Winter Sports Adventure Camp

These week-long adventures are designed for active outdoorspeople and feature daily easy, moderate, and advanced activities including snowshoe hikes, Nordic ski clinics and tours, winter natural history programs, and winter outdoors skills programs. Also included are daily yoga & stretching, historic and cultural programs, evening pre-dinner social hours, and featured guest speakers. One 25-minute massage is included for each participant. All programs are guided and require 1-4 hours of exertion.

National Ski Patrol Level I Avalanche Course

This 24 hour course is essential for winter hikers, skiers, and mountaineers to evaluate and avoid avalanche hazards in the winter backcountry, and conditions permitting, will work in the avalanche terrain of Tuckerman Ravine. Classroom time will focus on weather, snow pack and terrain. We will also emphasize avalanche characteristics and fracture mechanics. The International Avalanche Hazard Levels will be explained along with the ways in which they affect decision making for safe travel. We will practice with individual avalanche beacons and demonstrate their use in search and rescue.

Winter Mountaineering Skills on Mt. Washington

A two-day, two-night course for mountaineers ready to make the jump to lightweight ascents of alpine snow, ice and mixed climbs. The White Mountains offer some of the finest mountaineering terrain in the country and provide a reliable training ground for alpine climbs in the greater mountain ranges of the world. The course will focus on learning and refining winter mountaineering skills and efficiently climbing moderate snow and ice terrain. It is a comprehensive introduction to basic winter mountaineering skills.

Rails to Trails Hiking

A weekend of hiking on old rail lines converted into hiking trails. One day will be spent hiking the Lackawanna Cutoff from Blairstown, NJ to Portland, PA, which will cross two cement viaducts. The next day will be spent hiking the "Lehigh and New England" rail line from Columbia to Blairstown, NJ. Car shuttles will be provided each day. Mason Logie will give a history of each rail line.
