A Dream Achieved: Hiking the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail
New Milford residents Betsy and John Murphy are avid hikers and long time supporters of the AMC, ATC and PCT. Although they have done many hikes and backpacking trips in the East, they have always been drawn to Western wilderness trails.
In early May of 2016 they began a long awaited journey (a 40 year dream), hiking from the Mexican border to Canada on the PCT. Never quitting the trail, they did fall short of making the total distance, executing a very long (1,935 mile) "section" hike arriving at Manning Park in British Columbia on October 3rd. With determination, they returned in 2017 and completed the undone Central California part of the trail (665 miles). See and hear the story of their approach to the planning and the logistics of this challenging 150 day expedition (and of their 57 day completion quest in 2017).
From the high chaparral desert to the interconnected national wilderness areas of Northern California through the many lake areas of Oregon northward to the rugged landscapes of Washington's Cascades, the terrain varied daily and the immense views were beyond grand. No image can truly capture what the eye sees, but we will try to present what we saw and experienced.
Appetizers 6:30pm; dinner 7.00pm; presentation 7:30pm. $8 members, $10 non-members. No reservations, pay at door. St Thomas Church, 95 Greenwood Ave. Details, directions at www.ct-amc.org.
