"Go With The Snow!" - Tug Hill XC Ski MLK Weekend Fri-Mon, January 12-15, 2018 Leader: Ron Gonzalez, email@example.com Co-leader: Russ Faller, firstname.lastname@example.org We'll spend the long weekend in the most reliable snow pocket in the East, the Tug Hill Plateau of north-central New York State. The Tug Hill typically receives over 300 inches of snow per winter. Northwest winds pick up moisture from Lake Ontario before running into the Tug Hill's 2000 foot elevations. The result is the famous "lake effect snow machine." We'll be cross country skiing on well-maintained backcountry trails in the area's state forests, with the option for spending a day at the local nordic center. There is also a sweet little downhill ski area nearby if some in the group want to make turns. Outings are suitable for intermediate and advanced XC skiers. You will need to bring your own ski equipment, food and water, proper clothing, and any other gear necessary for spending a full day out in the snowy woods. We'll be staying in a shared house with fully equipped eat-in kitchen, bathroom, linens and towels. Breakfast cereals, bread, coffee, tea, sugar, butter, milk, and eggs are provided. Bring cooked food to share for pot luck dinners; we'll each make our own breakfasts and trail lunches. Plan on a 5+ hour drive from the NYC Metro area to the Tug Hill. Be prepared to drive in heavy snow conditions if the lake effect kicks in. Snow tires are recommended, and bring a shovel in your car. We'll be driving up Friday, January 12. Saturday and Sunday will be the main activity days. Some people leave for home Monday morning, but there's always a few who stay most of Monday to play in the snow, leaving in the afternoon.
