Have you been wanting to learn the basics of backpacking, but getting up to the White Mountains is too far, or maybe you just want to explore a new area? With historic back country shelters, and distant views of the New York City lights, Harriman State Park and our New Harriman Outdoor center provide a great venue to learn the art of backpacking and back country camping, all within a stone's throw from New York City and New Jersey. Spend this 5 day trip hiking from one rustic back country shelter to the next, bonding with new friends, and checking out the views along the way. Learn the skills to stay safe and comfortable in the back country and gain a connection to the outdoors exploring this exciting new course area.
Day 1: After an introductory meeting with instructors, group and parents at Harriman Outdoor Center, gear is checked and issued. After Lunch the group begins their hike to the first campsite where they learn about camp set up, cooking on a camp stove, and sleeping comfortably in the backcountry.
Day 2-4: The group works together to break down camp. Goes over their route for the day, and hit the trail for their next camp site stopping for lunch and breaks along the trail. The group continues refining their outdoor skills, and developing friendships and enjoying the scenic views along the way. After arriving in camp, the group may play a game, or participate in team initiatives, or have some down time to reflect on their experience in the outdoors. Each night the group will set up tents, or possibly have the chance to sleep in stone back country shelters or lean-tos
Day 5: The group hikes to the trailhead where they are picked up and transported back to Harriman Outdoor Center. They will have lunch, de-issue borrowed equipment and debrief their trip before being picked up in the afternoon.
*Prices include instruction, transportation during the course, all meals from lunch the first day through lunch the last day, group equipment (tents, stoves, pots/pans, etc.), and all camping fees during the program.
