Combine the thrill and adventure of rock climbing, sea-kayaking, and hiking while exploring Mount Desert Island, Maine. This trip utilizes a base camp for tenting and cooking, with easy access to all areas of the island for instruction and adventure. Learn teamwork and find personal reward, all while taking in the spectacular beauty of Acadia National Park. This trip begins and ends at Pinkham Notch in New Hampshire. With advanced notice, participants can be dropped off or picked up in Acadia For ages: 14-16 General Itinerary: The participants will meet each other and the AMC instructors on the first morning at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. We will spend the morning getting to know each other, covering logistics and expectations, and thoroughly checking our personal gear and all group equipment. After packing up, we'll head to Acadia National Park. Lunch will be on the road. Arriving in the late afternoon, we will head to our campsite and pitch the camp that will be ours for the rest of the trip. That evening we'll review the events for the week and prepare for the adventures ahead. The group will spend 7 days hiking and exploring in Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island off the coast of Maine, enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in New England. Our trip will consist of several interesting day hikes, two days of sea kayaking, and two days of rock climbing. Day Hiking ~ Hiking will be 2 - 7 miles over gentle mountainous terrain, getting amazing views of the ocean and islands. Some of the places we may explore include the Western Mountains, Acadia Mountain, Sargent and Penobscot Mountains, The Bubbles, and a number of other mountainous areas on the island. All hiking will be just for the day and returning to camp that evening. Sea Kayaking ~ Two days will be spent with the Maine State Sea Kayaking staff learning and reviewing basic sea kayak techniques, safety concerns, proper equipment use and the correct way to move through the water. We'll keep a lookout for harbor seals, osprey, and other coastal birds. All sea kayaking equipment will be provided. Rock Climbing ~ Two days will be spent with the Atlantic Climbing School Guides. You will learn about proper equipment use, how to belay, the basics of placing and removing of protective devices, as well as the correct way to move over rock. Rock climbing will be done locally at Otter Cliffs and other sites on Mt. Desert Island. Atlantic Climbing School will provide all rock climbing equipment needed. If you own rock climbing shoes and a harness you may bring them.
