Ever wondered what that trail you've hiked so many times in the summer looks like with 10 inches of snow on the ground? Or what it would feel like to ski through those beautiful open woods by the brook? But you have always been hesitant venturing off the beaten path because you have an acute sense of self-preservation? Still, doesn't that hillside look so appealing for some skiing….!?
Then you are the perfect candidate for this class! We will take your survival instinct and hone it on how to safely travel off the beaten path through the woods and yet satisfy your child-like curiosity.
Light backcountry skiing is a combination of the skills learned cross-country, telemark, and alpine touring (also referred to as AT or randonee) skiing. We will start with the basics of how to stop and turn on shallow terrain, review telemark and alpine turns, and the always-present snowplow. We will practice going uphill, using scales or kick wax. We will take some laps on the ski slope and become more confident with our balance and turns.
Once we feel good about our turns on the groomed slope, we will start venturing out into the well-lit woods on the sides of Storrs Hill to practice the newly acquired skiing techniques on ungroomed snow. Over the classes we will progressively tackle more challenging terrain and teach backcountry-specific skiing techniques. The meaning of survival skiing will be thoroughly explored! The last day of the class will be on a Saturday morning and we will put all of the lessons together and plan our own backcountry skiing trip in the woods around the hill and venture out for a couple of hours.
We will talk about gear: skis, bindings, poles, boots, and what to bring along in the backpack that you will wear for most of the classes.
Classes are every Wed evening starting on January 17th, 2018 at Storrs hill, 6.30-7.45pm, Last day will be on Saturday February 17th and we will do a short BC trip in the area. $90 for series, includes lift tickets ($65 for series for Lebanon resident).
Our philosophy on BC skiing in New England is nicely summarized in an interview by the Vermont Standard, http://www.thevermontstandard.com/2015/12/off-the-beaten-path-learning-to-backcountry-ski/
