Wildcat D and Jackson, New Hampshire,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
The goal of this trip is to explore the Wildcat Valley (WV) ski trail in a new way (new to us at least): start at the Jackson XC network's Carter Notch parking lot; ski to the base of the ungroomed WV ski trail via the groomed Jackson trails; ascend the WV ski trail (possibly using climbing skins) to as high (the Birch Glade? the Wildcat D summit?) as the group is able to go comfortably; have lunch and then ski back down. Participants will best enjoy this trip on metal edged nordic skis capable of uphill travel without skins; that is, skis with either fishscale bases or wax pockets for kick wax. Skins are not required to reach the base of the WV ski trail. However, it is required to bring skins, either full skins or "kicker" skins, as we anticipate that they may be necessary for the ascent of the WV ski trail itself. Participants should be comfortable making downhill turns on their metal edged cross country skis and be in excellent physical shape to give the team a good chance of reaching a point reasonably high on the backcountry portion of the trail.
