Harriman Outdoor Center, NY,
New York, Highlands Region,
AMC's newest Teen Trail Crew is based at the AMC Harriman Outdoor Center in Harriman State Park. The center is a refurbished camp on the shores of Breakneck Pond and Teen Base Camp participants will camp outside in 3-sided Lean-to's. This crew is designed for youth aged 14-17 to experience challenging and rewarding trail stewardship work just North of New York City. These week-long Teen Trail Crews are led by qualified AMC Trail Crew Leaders. The program begins on Sunday afternoon with an orientation and dinner at AMC's Harriman Outdoor Center. Each weekday morning after breakfast, the crew will hike to a nearby trail to work on trail reconstruction and maintenance projects. The first participants of Harriman's Teen Trail Crews are the lucky ones that will learn what goes into building a hiking trail as the first slated project will be to start constructing a trail around the pond. Other projects may involve clearing brush to better define existing trails, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges, painting blazes, and other crucial conservation tasks. Please remember that while we work within the abilities and comfort of the group, the nature of hiking and the work is strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine. It is certainly not all work though. Your crew will take plenty of time to play cards, toss Frisbee, take hikes and maybe even take a swim in the pond. The food is abundant and delicious; crew members all get their turn cooking quesadillas, pasta feasts, and other backcountry delicacies. All of the food for the week is included in the program cost, as are tents, other shared camping equipment, and leadership from two AMC Crew Leaders with ample Outdoor and Youth Leadership experience. The crew will have access to flush toilets and dish washing facilities.
