Join this exciting AMC Teen Trail Crew based out of the North Maine Woods. This program is an ideal opportunity for teens, ages 16-18, to live and work in northern Maine, while engaging in valuable trail stewardship projects. The week will begin on Wednesday afternoon with an orientation and dinner at Camp Dodge in the White Mountains, NH. The crew will have breakfast at 7:00 a.m. the next morning then immediately depart for AMC's property east of Greenville, Maine, roughly a four-hour drive, in an AMC van.
On Friday, the crew will start on their trail projects, which may include projects ranging from clearing brush to building bridges or rock staircases, to bushwhacking off trail to monitor the Appalachian Trail corridor. The crew spends the rest of the time working on the area trails and learning about stewardship, conservation, and sustainable land management. Crew members' day packs usually weigh about 20 pounds, which would include the various tools the crew will use each day. Please remember that the work will be strenuous and demanding, and that we will be out rain or shine. At the end of each day, you return to base camp for the night. On the tenth day of the crew, you will pack up and return to Camp Dodge in the White Mountains. At Camp Dodge, you will clean up and join staff and other volunteer crews for a celebratory BBQ at 6 p.m. Participants may leave that Tuesday evening or the next Wednesday morning- the last night's stay and morning breakfast are included in the program cost.
During the week, we will be camping in large canvas tents and preparing meals as a group. AMC provides the tents, food, cooking equipment and other group gear. Our base camp on Long Pond is vehicle accessible, allowing you to bring along a few more comfort items than the Spike crews. Participants will learn to cook quality meals in the woods, and there will be plenty of it. After dinner and cleanup, the crew often plays games, tells stories, but most of all just kicks back and enjoys the evening in the woods. Getting There: This crew will start and end at AMC Camp Dodge Volunteer Center in the White Mountains, NH and travel to and from the north Maine woods. Camp Dodge is located 8 miles south of Gorham, NH and 20 miles north of North Conway, NH. Public transportation is available by bus as well as the potential to carpool with other participants.
