Registration is required for this activity.
Join us as we help important partners in land conservation! Over the years AMC Teen Volunteer Trail Crews have done trail work on beautiful land trust properties in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Maine and the Western Maine foothills. While details can change, the crew will most likely be camping in a vehicle accessible, primitive campsite on one of the land trusts' properties. It is somewhat of a hybrid between a Spike crew and a Base crew. Because of this, the crew will have the luxury of only carrying in food, water, and gear for less than a quarter of a mile before setting up camp. In the morning, the crew may drive a short distance to a trail head or simply hike from camp where they will hike carrying only water, rain gear, lunch, tools and safety gear, to the project site.
These crews are not all work; there are plenty of opportunities to swim, see the views, eat great food, and more. After leaving the project site each day, the crew will head back to their private camping area. Because of the location of the camp, volunteers can bring more comforts of home: a pillow, a Frisbee, or a journal, for example. Food will be easier to have on hand than our crews that hike miles to set up camp and thus will contain more fresh food.
All participants assist with meal preparation. Participants will learn to cook quality meals in the woods, and there will be plenty of it. The crew builds quite an appetite over the course of the week. After dinner and cleanup, the crew plays games, tells stories, and discusses conservation and environmental ethics - but most of all they just kick back and enjoy the evening. We supply all group gear such as tents, tarps, ropes, food and group cooking equipment for the crew. A full gear list will be provided upon initial registration and participants will receive 40 community service hours upon completion of the week.
The crew will return on Friday to Camp Dodge in time to clean up and join the Friday night barbecue at 6 pm.
Complete registration packets are due 3 weeks prior to start date.
