Mine Hill Rd. Roxbury CT,
Connecticut, West of River,
This approximately 5.5 mile hike goes along two loop trails through moderate but often rocky terrain, with gentle ascents/descents and two steeper climbs, one at the beginning of the hike. The last mile goes along a wide path and former road, running in part slightly above the Shepaug River. Mine Hill is the site of a 19th century iron mine and furnace complex, and we'll end the hike by exploring some of the restored historical structures maintained on site by the Roxbury Land Trust. The hike also passes by old mine tunnels (now entryways for bat hibernacula) and former quarrying sites. We'll keep a moderate pace, adjusting for lots of leaf and branch debris resulting from recent storms. Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start. Please register with hike leader by 7:00 a.m. morning of the hike, preferably by email or text. Rain or falling snow cancels; if weather conditions are uncertain, contact Leader by 7:00. a.m. to confirm that the hike is taking place. Please bring water and a snack/ lunch. Co-leader welcome.
Take Route 67 north or south in Roxbury to Shepaug River and then Mine Hill Road, proceeding westward on the road 0.3 miles to the parking area on the right--look for the large brown and yellow sign.
