Camp Dodge Volunteer Canter - White Mountains, NH,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
Registration is required for this activity.
This crew is designed for youth aged 15-17 who are interested in learning more about trail work, the outdoors, camping, and how to reduce their impact when recreating. The transition from a base camp facility to a backcountry campsite is perfect for those with little or no previous backcountry camping experience.
Week 1: Crews stay at the AMC's Camp Dodge Volunteer Center, a few miles north of Pinkham Notch Visitor Center near Gorham, NH. Each day, the crew will hike to a nearby trail to work on trail reconstruction and maintenance projects. Projects may involve clearing brush to better define existing trails, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges, and painting blazes. At Camp Dodge, the crew will be served breakfast, dinner, and trail lunches, and will have access to flush toilets, showers, and dish washing facilities.
Weekend: Crew members will take part in a two-day Leave No Trace awareness training, learning how to minimize their impacts while working and recreating outdoors, and will spend the night tent camping in the woods.
Week 2: After packing up food, camping equipment, and gear for the week ahead, the crew will hike to a primitive campsite in the White Mountains, with no pre-existing facilities. At camp the crew will work together to set up and take down tents, prepare meals, and clean dishes. The trail work will be similar to the first week, at a location not far from the backcountry campsite. Throughout the week, the crew will put into practice the Leave No Trace camping principles they learned over the weekend.
Please remember that while we work within the abilities and comfort of the group, the nature of the hiking and the work is strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine.
