Overview

A moderately paced 6.5 mile loop hike in Penwood State Park. We will head out on the blue blazed Metacomet trail and return by the orange and yellow trails. Great views of the Farmington River Valley from a trap rock ridge. Terrain is up and down and can be a bit rugged in spots so trekking poles are highly recommended. Also due to the potential of strong winds on the open ridge, winter layers, gloves, ski hat and warm footware are required. Please bring microspikes and snowshoes. Trail conditions will determine what traction devices are needed. Expect a 2mph pace to keep warm with occasional breaks as needed. Bring two liters of fluids and plenty of energy snacks that can be eaten on the go. Inclement weather and poor driving conditions will cancel. Meet at 9:15am for a prompt 9:30am start from the Penwood SP parking area. Co-leader is welcome. Contact leader with any questions. Directions: Penwood SP parking area is located off Rte. 185, between Rte. 10 in Simsbury and Rte. 218 in Bloomfield on the town line. Look for the small brown CT state park sign.
