Join us on this hut to hut adventure as we explore a challenging yet stunning environment. Beginning with dinner and a comfortable night's lodging at AMC Highland Center we gear up for our backcountry adventure. We embark on our hike up the Airline Trail to Madison Hut. The next day we traverse the rocky northern Presidential Range to Lakes of the Clouds Hut giving us ample opportunity to explore the ridge in full summer glory. From Lakes of the Clouds we continue along the southern Presidential Range to Mizpah Hut. We hike to the Highland Center for a quick resupply before continuing onto Zealand and Galehead Huts both bordering on the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Depending on the energy of the group and weather there are many opportunities to summit the higher peaks each day. This trip involves challenging terrain including steep rocky ascents, uneven footing and exposed terrain above treeline. Weather can change quickly and become quite cold and windy. Participants should be excellent hiking shape, have proper hiking boots and clothing and be prepared for a summer alpine adventure! ITINERARY: Day one: dinner and pre hike meeting at Highland Center Day two: After breakfast we drive to the Appalachia Trailhead and hike 3.8 miles up the Airline Trail to Madison Hut gaining 3500 feet in elevation.* Day three: We continue from Madison Hut across the ridge to Lakes of the Clouds Hut. This is the toughest day of our traverse with 7.2 miles over rough rocky terrain.* Day four: Our next destination is a 5.0 mile hike from Lakes of the Clouds Hut located on the shoulder of Mt Washington at 5200 feet to Mizpah Hut. Elevation loss over 5 miles is 2000 feet. * Day five: hike the 2.7 miles from AMC's Mizpah Hut losing 1700 feet of elevation to the trailhead at the Highland Center for a food resupply. We will then set off for the A-Z Trail gaining 2000 feet of elevation to summit Mt Tom. The 5 mile trek takes us to the falls at Zealand Hut. The total day's mileage is 7.7 miles. Day six: We begin the day by climbing 1000 feet to Zeacliff for our first view of the Pemigewasset Wildnerness. The Twinway Trail is 7 miles over several open ledges before the final push to South Twin. Our final night is spent at Galehead Hut located in the heart of the Pemigewasset Wilderness in the boreal forest. * Day seven: We hike out 4.6 miles down the Gale River Trail to where a van will meet us and transport the group back to the Highland Center. *If time, weather and energy allow, there will be options to summit the higher peaks.
