Introduction to Family Backpacking

If you and your family would like to try out backpacking, this program is for you. AMC's guides introduce backpacking skills such as backcountry travel considerations, Leave No Trace ©, map & compass, campsite cooking, and first aid skills to active adults and kids over 8 years of age. The first night is spent at the Highland Center for trip orientation and gear review before setting out for a 3-day, 2-night trip to Ethan Pond perched on the edge of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: •Learn backpacking skills: backcountry travel, LNT, navigation, backcountry cooking, basic first aid, and more. •Free use of all gear and equipment for backpacking •Travel through beautiful remote terrain in the White Mountains SAMPLE ITINERARY: Day 1 Check in to the lodge anytime after 3pm. 5:30pmMeet & Greet 6:00pm Dinner 7:30pm Welcome & Orientation: Discussion of itinerary, weather, and gear. Day 2 8:00am Prepare to depart for hike. Travel to Trailhead (10 minute drive) Trail Lunches 3:00pmApproximate arrival time at the campsite. Setup camp; learn the techniques for tent site selection, setup, camp kitchen setup, cooking, food storage, water purification, and more. 6:00pm Dinner Day 3 AMAM Opportunities for wildlife observation! Prepare breakfast. Day hike options: Thoreau Falls or Mt. Willey PM Prepare dinner Day 4 AMAM Breakfast, Break down camp. 9:00amHike out via Ethan Pond Trail. Lunch on the trail. Van pickup and return to Highland Center for trip debrief and farewells.
