Classic Haute Route Trek 7:30 PM at Illick's Mill, 100 Illick's Mill Rd, Bethlehem, PA. Join us for an evening of trekking in the Alps as John Rogers tells of his August 2017 travels on the Classic Haute Route from Chamonix France to Zermatt Switzerland. Many consider the Haute Route as the ultimate high Alpine walk during summer months or cross-country ski trek in winter. Our adventure traverses the European Alps, between Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, by crossing a series of high cols and impressive glaciers.
The group of five Brits and one American was led by a certified Swiss Mountain Guide, and hiked 11 days, ~120km, with more than 10,000 meters of ascent and descent. Along the way, they summited the Pigne d`Arola (3,796 meters / 12,454 feet) and the Tete Blanche (3,724 meters / 12,218 feet).
The trek followed trails well above tree line, climbing up valleys to snowline, scrambling on exposed ridges, snow slope climbing and significant glacier travel with ropes, crampons, and ice-axes. On route, the group spent most nights in remote Swiss mountain huts, including the "exciting" Cabane de Bertol, before walking into the beautiful Swiss village of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn.
Information on upcoming outdoor events will be available. Everyone is welcome. Reservations not required. Contact coordinator with any questions.
